“The Names of our Savior in the Book of Mormon”

The Savior is referred to by one hundred different names in the Book of Mormon—from the first reference to him as “Lord” in 1 Nephi 1:1 to the final reference to him as “the Eternal Judge” in Moroni 10:34.   Truly then it is another testament of Christ!  Each of the one hundred names signifies a different attribute or characteristic of the Lord and was used appropriately to convey the prophets’ recognition of who He is and what His mission represents. For example, “Savior” means that Christ came to save His people from their sins. “Holy One” signifies that He is holy and without sin, being perfect in all things. “God of the Whole Earth” reflects His universal interest in all men and their redemption. “Lord of Hosts” indicates that Christ is a God of battles. And “Lord Omnipotent” means that Christ is the Lord of all, possessing all power. The names given to our Lord take on new significance when they are approached through a thoughtful and sensitive study of their meanings. His profound character, his singular mission, and his divine relationship to man are thereby more clearly revealed.  Take some time to ponder through His list of names listed in the table below and notice which speaks to you most during this Christmas Season.

About the Author

Matt Steadman

  1. My favorite is “Father” because it implies a close and loving relationship – one that I always hope for.

  2. Savior is my favorite. It reminds me of his great sacrifice for everyone but especially for me and what that means for my eternal progression.

  3. My favorite is from Hebrews 9:11 – “high priest of good things to come.” Because of Him we can have hope for the future.

  4. Tough question because He is all these things, so I choose “Wonderful” because for me it encapsulates all of the above, and that’s what makes Him so wonderful.

  5. My favorite is Savior of the world. He died not only for me but for everyone so we could all be saved and return to live with our Heavenly Father again.

  6. I love His title of the Good Shepherd. He guides us, loves us, knows each of us by name, cares about us, cares for us, protects us from evil, heals us when we are sick, searches for us when we go astray and carries us close to His heart.

  7. Savior is how I see him. He saved us before & he will safe us again. He is always there for us!
